What is GrabFood?

Figure 1: Grab Food Logo (Ahmad, 2020)

Grab Holdings Inc. is a technology company based in Singapore which operates numerous subsidiaries including Grab transport, GrabFood, GrabMart, GrabExpress, GrabPay, GrabInsure, GrabRewards and GrabGifts. (Azhar, 2020) They originally started off as a taxi hailing service in Malaysia with them now expanding to various different southeast Asian countries and the various subsidiaries which are mentioned above. (Grab, 2021).

GrabFood is a food delivery service offered as a service in a mobile app known as Grab. It is southeast Asia’s most used delivery service, connecting hungry customers to local restaurants and eateries for freshly made food. (Zhang, 2020) This raises the question however, why is Grabfood so big? Here are a few reasons.

  • Variety: it connects users with local restaurants and eateries. From Arabic to Italian, Chinese to Malay, the options span a wide range of cuisines.
  • Inclusive Standards: GrabFood collaborates with any food place that meets its quality standards. This inclusivity ensures a diverse menu for users. (Chen, 2024)
  • Price Range: It offers a wide price range in terms of food, catering to as many people as possible being able to choose from affordable to upscale options.

GrabFood creates an ecosystem with their being 3 key stakeholders (excluding grab):

1. Customers

  • At the center of GrabFood are the hungry customers. Whether its a student, a businessman, or a family it offers a quick and convenient service for food to be delivered straight to them, having to pay an extra fee for take out and delivery charges.

2. Eateries and Restaurants

  • They collaborate with a vast network of eateries and restaurants. These establishments benefit from increased visibility, access to a broader customer base, and streamlined delivery services.
  • Unlike some food delivery platforms that focus only on high-end restaurants, GrabFood want variety. It partners with street vendors, small cafes, and family-owned eateries, ensuring that everyone has a chance to thrive. (Blakrishnan, 2021)

3. Delivery Drivers

  • Delivery drivers play a crucial role in the ecosystem. They are the connection point between hungry customers and their meals.
  • Many drivers appreciate the flexibility that GrabFood offers. They can choose their working hours, balancing other commitments while earning an income. (Zhang, 2020)

GrabFood creates a win-win-win situation. Customers get their meals, eateries gain exposure, and drivers earn a living. It’s an ecosystem where everyone benefits. Money flows within this ecosystem. Customers pay for food, which supports eateries and sustains drivers. It’s a cycle of economic empowerment. (Blakrishnan, 2021)

What if?

What if GrabFood were introduced to Maldives?

The local economy and dining culture may be greatly impacted by the arrival of GrabFood or other such meal delivery services in the Maldives. Academic sources indicate that the introduction of these services frequently results in a growth in the market and an improvement in customer convenience. For example, Collison (2020) discovered that incremental revenue from online meal delivery services ranges from 30 to 50 percent, indicating that these services have the potential to boost overall restaurant sales. Furthermore, the global food delivery market has tripled in size since 2017 due to its fast growth (Hirschberg, 2020).

Given the tourist-driven economy of the Maldives, GrabFood's arrival may improve visitors' eating experiences by providing a greater selection of meal alternatives that can be delivered right to their destinations. Due to their enhanced ability to reach clients beyond their immediate geographic zone, local eateries may see a rise in revenue as a result. Furthermore, it can lead to job openings for delivery staff and boost the community's economy as a result of higher food-related spending.

It's crucial to remember that, even though meal delivery services can have a good impact, they could also present difficulties for established restaurants and raise competitiveness in the regional food market. The degree to which the service is successfully incorporated into the Maldives' current economic and cultural landscape will determine its long-term implications.
